ActionType: glossaryThe distance between the strings and the fretboard, directly affecting playability and tone.## Definition Action refers to the height of the strings above the frets on a stringed instrument. It is measured at specific points along the neck, most commonly at the 12th fret, and is expressed in fractions of an inch or millimeters. Action is one of the most critical setup parameters because it determines how much finger pressure is needed to cleanly fret a note. Low action makes a guitar easier to play and facilitates fast playing styles, but if set too low it can cause fret buzz, where a vibrating string contacts adjacent frets and produces an unwanted rattling sound. High action requires more finger strength but can produce a cleaner, louder tone and is often preferred by slide guitarists and heavy-handed players. ## In Practice Setting action is a balancing act that depends on multiple factors: neck relief, fret levelness, nut slot depth, and saddle height all interact to determine final string height. A luthier typically adjusts action after confirming the neck relief is correct and the frets are level. Acoustic guitars generally run slightly higher action than electrics due to their greater string vibration amplitude. Common targets are around 2.0mm on the treble side and 2.5mm on the bass side at the 12th fret for acoustics, and roughly 1.5mm to 2.0mm for electrics. Players with a light touch can often go lower, while aggressive strummers may need more clearance.
