Setting the action is the central goal of guitar setup—it determines how hard the player must press to fret notes cleanly. Lower action makes the guitar easier to play but increases the risk of fret buzz; higher action provides cleaner tone and more volume but demands more finger pressure. The optimal action is a balance dictated by the player's style, string gauge, and the instrument's condition. ## Process Action is measured at the 12th fret using a precision ruler or action gauge, reading the distance from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string. Common acoustic guitar action targets are 2.0-2.5mm (5/64-3/32 inch) on the treble E and 2.5-3.0mm (3/32-7/64 inch) on the bass E, though players' preferences vary widely.
