The archtop became the guitar of choice for big band and jazz rhythm sections due to its superior projection. John D'Angelico and later Jimmy D'Aquisto elevated archtop building to a fine art in New York City, creating instruments still considered benchmarks of the form. ## Construction Archtop guitars feature a top carved from a solid billet of spruce (or occasionally maple) into an arched profile, with parallel tone bars rather than X-bracing. The back is similarly carved from maple. The sides are bent maple, and the neck is typically maple with an ebony fingerboard. F-holes on either side of the strings allow sound to project outward. A floating bridge (not glued to the top) and a trapeze or floating tailpiece transmit string energy to the carved top.
