Vasily Andreyev, a musician and impresario, transformed the balalaika from a crude folk instrument into a refined concert instrument in the 1880s, standardizing its construction and founding the first balalaika orchestra. Andreyev's orchestra toured internationally with great success, establishing the balalaika as a symbol of Russian culture worldwide. Balalaika orchestras remain active in Russia and in Russian diaspora communities globally. ## Construction The balalaika's most distinctive feature is its triangular body, which consists of a flat back, two flat sides meeting at a point, and a slightly curved or flat soundboard. The body is constructed from thin strips of spruce (soundboard) and maple or birch (back and sides).
