The Fender Jazz Bass followed in 1960, offering a slimmer neck and dual pickups. By the 1970s, the electric bass had almost completely replaced the double bass in popular music. ## Construction Bass guitars typically have a longer scale length (34 inches standard, or 30 inches for short-scale models) than guitars to accommodate the lower pitch range. Bodies are solid wood, usually alder, ash, or mahogany. Necks are longer and reinforced with a truss rod and sometimes graphite rods for additional stiffness.
