Belly (Top/Soundboard)Type: glossaryThe front face of an acoustic instrument responsible for projecting sound; also called the top or soundboard.## Definition The belly, also referred to as the top or soundboard, is the thin plate of wood that forms the front face of an acoustic stringed instrument. It is the primary sound-radiating surface: energy from the vibrating strings is transmitted through the bridge into the belly, which then moves air to produce audible sound. The belly is typically made from a softwood such as Sitka spruce, Engelmann spruce, or western red cedar, chosen for its favorable stiffness-to-weight ratio. A well-made belly is thin enough to vibrate freely yet strong enough to withstand decades of string tension. Thickness usually ranges from about 2.5mm to 3.2mm depending on the wood species, bracing pattern, and the builder's voicing goals. The grain orientation, tap tone response, and graduation all influence the final sound character. ## In Practice Luthiers spend considerable time selecting and voicing the belly because it has more influence on tone than any other single component. The process begins with choosing a bookmatched set of wood, then thicknessing and tap-testing the plate. Bracing is glued to the underside to provide structural support and shape the vibrational modes. Builders often flex the plate by hand and tap it to listen for responsiveness before and after bracing. Advanced builders may use Chladni patterns or electronic analysis to map the plate's modal behavior. The belly must also be finished carefully; too thick a lacquer coat can dampen vibrations and deaden the tone.
