Popularized by Leo Fender in electric guitar design, the bolt-on approach has also been adopted by some acoustic guitar builders, notably Taylor Guitars with their proprietary NT (New Technology) neck system. The primary advantage is adjustability: the neck can be removed, shimmed, and reattached without disturbing the finish or requiring steam. ## Process The neck pocket in the body is routed to precisely match the neck heel's dimensions. In electric guitar construction, this is typically a rectangular pocket in the body's upper bout. For acoustic guitars, the pocket is cut into the head block, similar in location to a dovetail mortise but with parallel (non-tapered) walls. The neck heel is shaped to fit snugly into the pocket. Bolt holes are drilled through the body's interior head block (or through a back-mounted plate) and into the neck heel. In the classic Fender design, four screws pass through a metal plate on the back of the body into threaded inserts or directly into the wood of the neck heel. More sophisticated systems, such as Taylor's NT joint, use a pair of bolts with shims to provide precise control over neck angle and alignment.
