BookmatchedType: glossaryA technique where a single piece of wood is split and opened like a book to create a symmetrical, mirror-image pair.## Definition Bookmatching is a method of preparing tonewoods in which a single billet of wood is resawn down the middle and the two halves are opened like the pages of a book. The result is two thin plates whose grain patterns are mirror images of each other. When glued along the center seam, they produce a visually symmetrical panel that is wider than the original piece. This technique is fundamental in lutherie for creating soundboards, backs, and sometimes sides of acoustic instruments. Beyond aesthetics, bookmatching ensures that the two halves share nearly identical physical properties such as density, stiffness, and moisture content. This mechanical symmetry helps the plate vibrate more evenly and respond more predictably when voiced by the builder. ## In Practice A luthier begins by selecting a quartersawn billet that is at least half the desired final width plus kerf allowance. The piece is carefully resawn on a bandsaw, producing two halves that are then planed or sanded to final thickness. The center joint must be perfectly straight and is typically glued with hide glue or titebond under clamping pressure. A well-executed bookmatch joint is nearly invisible on the finished instrument. Builders evaluate bookmatched sets not only for visual beauty but also for tap tone consistency between the two halves, discarding sets where one half is noticeably stiffer or denser than the other.
