It serves as the anchor point for the strings on the body end and is the critical mechanical link between the vibrating strings and the top. The bridge transfers string energy into the soundboard, which then amplifies and projects the sound. On steel-string guitars, the strings pass through holes in the bridge and are secured with bridge pins; on classical guitars, the strings are tied directly to the bridge. The bridge also holds the saddle, which defines the speaking length of the string and sets the string height at the body end. Bridge mass, footprint, and placement all significantly affect tone and structural integrity. ## In Practice Bridge design is a careful compromise between mass and strength. A heavier bridge dampens high-frequency response but adds sustain and warmth; a lighter bridge improves treble sparkle and responsiveness but must still withstand roughly 80 kg of string tension. Luthiers typically shape bridges from blanks, carving the wings thin for reduced mass while leaving the saddle slot area and pin holes robust. Placement is critical: the bridge must be positioned so that the saddle sits at precisely the correct scale length for accurate intonation.
