Bridge PlateType: glossaryA hardwood patch glued inside the body directly beneath the bridge to reinforce the soundboard and distribute string load.## Definition The bridge plate is a small, flat piece of hardwood glued to the interior surface of the soundboard, directly beneath the bridge. On steel-string acoustic guitars, it serves as a reinforcement patch that distributes the concentrated stress of the bridge pin holes across a wider area of the top. Without a bridge plate, the pull of steel strings would quickly tear through the soft spruce soundboard. The bridge plate also affects tone by adding localized stiffness and mass beneath the bridge. Bridge plates are most commonly made from hard maple or rosewood and are typically about 2mm to 3mm thick, roughly 50mm wide, and 100mm to 130mm long. The grain runs perpendicular to the soundboard grain for maximum cross-grain reinforcement. ## In Practice Installing a bridge plate is straightforward but precision matters. The plate must be centered under the bridge pin locations and glued with firm clamping pressure, usually applied through the sound hole using a specialized caul and magnet or cam clamp system. Over the life of an instrument, the bridge plate can wear or compress around the pin holes, allowing the ball ends of the strings to pull through. This is one of the most common repairs on older steel-string guitars. A luthier performing a bridge plate replacement must carefully remove the old plate without damaging the thin soundboard, then fit and glue a new one.
