Whether matching a client's reference photo, blending a touch-up repair invisibly into the surrounding finish, or creating consistent colors across a set of instruments, the ability to mix and apply colorants accurately separates competent finishers from masters. ## Process Color matching relies on understanding how different colorants interact with wood and with each other. The primary tools are dyes, stains, and pigmented toners. **Dyes** (aniline dyes, spirit-soluble dyes) are transparent and penetrate the wood fibers. They highlight figure and grain pattern but can fade with UV exposure. Dyes are mixed from primary colors—red, yellow, blue, and black—to achieve target hues. **Stains** (pigmented stains) sit on the surface and in the pores, partially obscuring the grain. They are more lightfast than dyes but less transparent. **Toners** are tinted finish coats (shellac, lacquer, or polyurethane with colorant added) sprayed over the surface.
