Dovetail Neck JointType: techniqueA precision-fit interlocking joint used to attach the neck to the body in many high-quality acoustic guitars, providing excellent tone transfer.## Overview The dovetail neck joint is the standard for high-quality acoustic steel-string guitars and has been used by major manufacturers like Martin since the 19th century. A tapered dovetail-shaped tenon is carved on the heel of the neck, and a matching mortise is cut into the body's head block. When fitted together with glue, the joint creates an extremely strong mechanical connection that efficiently transmits string vibration from the neck into the body. ## Process Construction begins with the body fully assembled—top, back, sides, and linings glued together. A mortise is cut into the head block, accessible through the sound hole. The mortise is tapered both in width and depth, creating a wedge-shaped pocket. The neck heel is shaped with a corresponding tapered tenon. The luthier carefully pares and fits the tenon to the mortise through a series of trial fittings, removing small amounts of material each time. The fit must be precise: tight enough to hold without glue, but not so tight that the joint must be forced together. A thin shim system may be used to fine-tune the neck angle and alignment. Once the fit is satisfactory, the neck angle is verified using a straightedge placed along the fretboard, which should project to the correct height at the bridge location. The joint is then glued, traditionally with hot hide glue, which allows future disassembly for repairs using heat and steam. After gluing, the joint is clamped and allowed to cure.
