The heartwood is renowned for its jet-black color, though perfectly uniform black ebony is increasingly rare and most pieces display some degree of brown or gray streaking. The wood is among the densest and hardest commercial timbers in the world, sinking in water and resisting indentation with remarkable tenacity. The grain is extremely fine and uniform, producing a smooth, almost polished surface even without finish. Macassar ebony (*Diospyros celebica*) from Indonesia offers dramatic black-and-brown striping as an alternative. ## Tonal Properties Ebony's extreme density and hardness contribute a bright, articulate, and precise tonal character to the instrument. As a fingerboard material, it provides a hard surface against which the strings are pressed, resulting in clear note definition, bright harmonics, and fast attack. The sustain is excellent because the dense wood efficiently transfers string vibrations to the neck. Compared to rosewood fingerboards, ebony tends to produce a brighter, crisper, more focused sound with more high-frequency content.
