Les Paul built "The Log" around 1940, a solid pine block with a neck and pickups. Leo Fender, a radio repairman with no lutherie background, created the Fender Broadcaster (later Telecaster) in 1950, the first commercially successful solid-body electric guitar. Its bolt-on neck and slab body were designed for efficient factory production. Gibson responded in 1952 with the Les Paul model, featuring a carved maple top on a mahogany body and a set neck. The Fender Stratocaster, introduced in 1954 with its contoured body and tremolo system, completed the trinity of foundational solid-body designs. ## Construction Solid-body electrics typically use one or two pieces of wood for the body, with no acoustic chamber. Common body woods include alder, ash, mahogany, and basswood. Neck attachment methods include bolt-on (Fender style), set-neck with glue (Gibson style), and neck-through construction where the neck extends the full length of the body. Magnetic pickups convert string vibration into electrical signals; single-coil pickups produce a bright, clear tone, while humbucking pickups offer a fatter, noise-free sound. Scale lengths are typically 25.5 inches (Fender) or 24.75 inches (Gibson).
