Engelmann SpruceType: tonewoodA lighter, more responsive spruce species favored by fingerstyle players for its shimmering overtones and touch sensitivity.## Botanical Description Engelmann spruce (*Picea engelmannii*) grows at high elevations throughout the Rocky Mountains, from British Columbia and Alberta down through Arizona and New Mexico. It typically reaches 25 to 40 meters in height and thrives between 1,500 and 3,500 meters of elevation. The wood is lighter in color than Sitka, often nearly white with a subtle golden hue. It is also lighter in weight, with a lower density that contributes to its characteristic responsiveness. Grain tends to be fine and even, though instrument-grade billets with perfectly quarter-sawn, tight grain require careful selection. ## Tonal Properties Engelmann spruce is prized for its sensitivity to light touch. It produces a more complex overtone spectrum than Sitka, with a shimmering, three-dimensional quality that fingerstyle guitarists find especially appealing. The lower stiffness compared to Sitka means Engelmann tops move more readily under light attack, yielding excellent note separation and a sweet, warm character. However, this same quality means Engelmann can compress or lose clarity under very heavy strumming. The bass is warm and round, the midrange is open and slightly scooped, and the trebles sparkle with harmonic content.
