The most prized instrument-grade European spruce comes from the Italian and Austrian Alps, the Bavarian Forest, the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, and the forests of Switzerland. Trees grown at high altitudes in harsh conditions develop exceptionally tight, even grain. The wood is typically pale cream to light gold, and fine-grained Alpine specimens can exhibit a subtle silky luster on quarter-sawn surfaces. European spruce has been the soundboard material of choice for stringed instruments since the Renaissance. ## Tonal Properties European spruce occupies a tonal middle ground between the brightness of Sitka and the warmth of Engelmann, with a complexity of overtone content that sets it apart from North American species. The fundamental is clear and well-defined, but the overtone series is rich and layered, giving notes a three-dimensional quality. Sustain is excellent, and the dynamic range spans from pianissimo whispers to forte projections with grace.
