F-HoleType: glossaryAn f-shaped sound opening found on archtop guitars, violins, and mandolins that allows the soundboard to vibrate more freely.## Definition An f-hole is an elongated, f-shaped opening cut into the soundboard of an archtop guitar, violin, viola, cello, mandolin, or similar instrument. Unlike the round sound hole of a flat-top guitar, f-holes are positioned on either side of the bridge and serve both acoustic and structural purposes. Acoustically, they allow air to move in and out of the body cavity, coupling the air resonance with the plate vibrations to produce the instrument's characteristic warm, woody tone. Structurally, the placement of f-holes on either side of the bridge, rather than a single hole in the center, allows the arched top to flex more independently in different zones. The shape, size, and placement of f-holes affect volume, tonal balance, and the distribution of frequencies. Wider or longer f-holes generally increase volume but can reduce sustain. ## In Practice Cutting f-holes is one of the more delicate operations in archtop construction. The luthier must first carefully lay out the positions symmetrically relative to the centerline and bridge location, then cut the openings using a scroll saw, sharp knife, or specialized f-hole cutter. The inner edges are typically cleaned up with small files and sandpaper. On carved-top instruments, the f-holes are usually cut after the initial arching is carved but before final graduation, so the builder can assess tap tones with the holes open.
