Gibson's original F-style designs featured an oval soundhole and carved top and back. Lloyd Loar's transformative 1922-1924 redesign introduced f-holes, a longer neck, and an elevated fingerboard, creating the F-5 model that would become the gold standard for bluegrass mandolin. Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass, played a 1923 Loar-signed F-5 that became the most famous mandolin in American music.
