Fan BracingType: techniqueA classical guitar bracing pattern where thin wooden struts radiate from the sound hole toward the lower bout like the ribs of a fan.## Overview Fan bracing is the traditional bracing system for classical and flamenco guitars, developed and refined by Antonio de Torres in the mid-19th century. Thin wooden struts are arranged in a fan-like pattern on the underside of the soundboard, radiating from the area below the sound hole toward the lower bout. This pattern provides structural support against string tension while allowing the top to vibrate freely, producing the warm, complex tone characteristic of classical guitars. ## Process The standard Torres fan pattern uses five to seven braces, symmetrically arranged about the centerline. The braces are typically made from straight-grained spruce, roughly 5-6mm wide and 10-14mm tall before shaping. They taper in both height and width from the sound hole end toward the lower bout. The luthier first marks the brace positions on the underside of the top, using a template or measured layout. Each brace is then individually fitted: the bottom surface of the brace must match the curvature of the top exactly. This is achieved by chalking the top surface, pressing the brace in place, and planing away the high spots indicated by chalk transfer. The braces are glued one at a time or in groups, using a dished workboard (a concave form) and go-bars (flexible sticks that press the braces against the top) or cam clamps.
