The result is an extraordinarily thin, glossy finish that is widely considered the gold standard for classical guitars and fine stringed instruments. Because the finish film is so thin—often less than 0.1mm—it adds minimal mass to the soundboard, allowing the top to vibrate freely and produce the most open, responsive tone possible. ## Process The process begins with thorough surface preparation. The bare wood must be sanded to at least 400 grit, with all scratches, dents, and glue residue removed. Many builders apply a pore filler (pumice slurry or commercial filler) before French polishing, especially on open-grained woods like rosewood or mahogany. The pad is constructed from a ball of cotton or wool wadding wrapped in a square of lint-free cotton or linen cloth. The pad is charged with shellac solution (typically a 1-2 pound cut—1-2 pounds of shellac flakes dissolved per gallon of denatured alcohol) and a small amount of lubricating oil (walnut, olive, or mineral oil) applied to the face.
