It consists of a core of absorbent material, typically cotton wadding or wool, wrapped in a smooth, lint-free outer cloth such as fine cotton or linen. The core acts as a reservoir for shellac solution, releasing it slowly through the outer cloth as the pad is worked across the wood surface. The pad is typically egg-sized and shaped to fit comfortably in the palm. ## Use in Lutherie French polish is the traditional finish for classical guitars and is also used on some high-end steel-string instruments. The muñeca is charged with shellac dissolved in denatured alcohol and worked across the guitar surface in circular, figure-eight, or straight patterns, building up extremely thin layers of finish. A drop of oil (olive, mineral, or walnut) is applied to the pad face to act as a lubricant, preventing the pad from sticking to the surface. The process builds a finish that is thin, acoustically transparent, and visually stunning, though it requires patience and practice to master. ## Selection Guide Most luthiers make their own muñecas from materials on hand. The inner core should be lint-free cotton wadding or cotton balls. The outer wrap should be a smooth, tightly woven cotton fabric free of texture or lint.
