It is the single point where the string's vibrating length is defined when fretted, making its shape and condition critical for accurate intonation and clean tone. A properly crowned fret has a smooth, symmetrical dome shape that allows the string to contact it at a precise, narrow line across its apex. The crown width and height vary by fret wire gauge. Wider crowns offer a larger contact area and can make string bending smoother, while narrower crowns provide a more precise feel. The crown material, whether nickel-silver or stainless steel, affects durability and the rate at which wear grooves develop. ## In Practice Fret crowning is performed after fret leveling, which flattens the tops of the frets to ensure they are all at the same height. Leveling creates a flat spot on each fret, and crowning restores the rounded profile by filing or stoning the fret from each side toward the center. Specialized crowning files with concave profiles are used to shape the crown without removing material from the apex. The luthier must work carefully and evenly to keep the crown centered over the tang. After crowning, the frets are polished with progressively finer abrasives until they are smooth and shiny. A well-crowned fret allows the string to ring cleanly with minimal friction and precise intonation.
