Rather than being uniformly thick, a well-graduated plate is typically thinner near the edges and thicker in the center or along key structural lines. This technique, perfected over centuries of violin making, allows the luthier to balance the plate's mass, stiffness, and flexibility for optimal sound production. ## Process The luthier begins with a rough plate—either a bookmatched blank or a single piece—thicknessed to slightly above the maximum target dimension. Using a combination of hand planes, scrapers, finger planes, and sometimes a drum sander, the plate is thinned to a target thickness map. For violin family instruments, graduation maps have been studied extensively. The center of a violin top might be 2.8-3.0mm thick, tapering to 2.2-2.5mm at the edges. Guitar graduation is less codified but follows similar principles: the area around the bridge is often left thicker (3.0-3.5mm for spruce) to handle string tension, while the lower bout and edges may be thinned to 2.5-2.8mm for greater responsiveness. Thickness is measured using a caliper or a magnetic thickness gauge, which allows measurement without removing the plate from the workbench.
