Three primary grain orientations are significant: quarter grain (quartersawn), where the annual rings run roughly perpendicular to the board face, producing straight, parallel grain lines; cross grain, where fibers run at an angle across the piece rather than along its length, generally considered a defect that weakens the wood; and end grain, the pattern visible when wood is cut across the fibers, revealing the annual ring structure. Quartersawn wood is strongly preferred for soundboards because its straight, even grain provides superior stiffness along the length and more predictable vibrational behavior. The tightness of the grain, meaning the spacing between annual rings, also matters.
