While similar to pore filler, grain filler typically has a finer particle size and is designed more for surface leveling than deep pore filling. It may be composed of fine silica, talc, or pumice suspended in a binder. Some products serve dual roles as both grain and pore fillers. ## Use in Lutherie Grain filler is applied after initial sealer coats have been sanded back, targeting any remaining grain texture visible through the sealer. On close-grained woods like spruce and maple, where pore filling is unnecessary, grain filler alone may be sufficient to create a perfectly flat surface. It is especially important under high-gloss finishes, where any grain texture telegraphs through the clear coats. The filler is applied thinly, sanded flat after curing, and followed by additional sealer or topcoats. ## Selection Guide Many luthiers use pumice powder mixed with shellac or lacquer as a traditional grain filler. Commercial options include Behlen Qualasole, StewMac ColorTone Grain Filler, and various automotive glazing putties. Water-based options are available from Aqua Coat. The product should sand easily without clogging and should be compatible with the finish system being used (lacquer, polyurethane, or shellac).
