Its primary purpose is to cover the exposed end grain at the base of the heel, which would otherwise be visually unappealing and vulnerable to moisture absorption. The heel cap also adds a finishing touch that visually ties the heel into the overall design of the instrument. Common heel cap materials include ebony, rosewood, plastic, or bone, often chosen to match the binding or other trim elements. On steel-string acoustic guitars, the heel cap is a standard component that completes the neck-to-body joint area. On classical guitars, a heel cap may or may not be present depending on the building tradition, as the Spanish heel construction method often leaves a clean, finished surface without one. ## In Practice Installing a heel cap is a straightforward operation. The bottom of the heel is trimmed flat and clean, the heel cap blank is cut slightly oversize, glued in place with clamping pressure, and then trimmed and sanded flush with the heel sides after the glue cures.
