It is the species most commonly referred to simply as "mahogany" in the guitar world. The heartwood ranges from pinkish-salmon when freshly cut to a rich reddish-brown with age, often displaying ribbon-stripe figure on quarter-sawn surfaces. The grain is straight to slightly interlocked, with a medium to coarse texture and a natural luster that polishes to a beautiful sheen. It is lighter and less dense than rosewood, contributing to a distinctly different tonal profile. ## Tonal Properties Mahogany back and sides produce a warm, focused, midrange-dominant tone that contrasts sharply with rosewood's scooped frequency profile. Where rosewood guitars sound wide and hi-fi, mahogany guitars sound woody, direct, and intimate. The bass is tight and punchy rather than deep and boomy, the midrange is pronounced and forward, and the trebles are warm and sweet without the sparkle of rosewood.
