It grows in the deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of southern India, as well as in Indonesia where it was introduced as a plantation species (marketed as Sonokeling). The heartwood ranges from dark purple-brown to chocolate with darker streaks and occasional figure. It is dense, oily, and resonant, with a characteristic sweet aroma when worked. The grain is typically interlocked, producing a ribbon-stripe appearance on quarter-sawn surfaces. ## Tonal Properties Indian rosewood is the benchmark back-and-sides tonewood against which all others are measured. It produces a full-spectrum response with deep, powerful bass, a characteristically scooped or recessed midrange, and bright, sparkling trebles.
