Inlays serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. Fingerboard position markers (dots, blocks, or ornate patterns at specific fret positions) help players navigate the neck visually. Headstock inlays often display the maker's name or logo. Rosette inlays surround the sound hole, and body inlays may adorn the top, back, or sides. The art of inlay ranges from simple dot markers that take minutes to install to elaborate pictorial scenes involving hundreds of individually cut and fitted pieces that require weeks of painstaking work. ## In Practice Creating inlays involves several steps: designing the pattern, cutting the inlay pieces from the chosen material, routing or chiseling matching cavities in the instrument surface, fitting the pieces into the cavities, gluing them in place, and then sanding and polishing flush with the surrounding surface. Pearl and abalone are cut using a jeweler's saw with fine blades, while the cavities are typically routed with a small rotary tool or cut by hand with a sharp knife and small chisels. The fit must be tight, with minimal gaps between the inlay and the surrounding wood. Any gaps are filled with a mixture of dust and adhesive.
