It is a fast-growing tropical hardwood that can reach 25 meters in height, with a broad, spreading canopy. The heartwood ranges from golden amber to deep chocolate brown, frequently displaying dramatic curly, flamed, or fiddleback figure that makes it one of the most visually spectacular tonewoods in existence. Unlike the softwood spruces and cedars typically used for soundboards, koa is a dense hardwood, and its use as a top wood produces a distinctly different tonal character. ## Tonal Properties As a top wood, koa produces a bright, focused, midrange-forward tone that is markedly different from spruce or cedar. New koa tops can sound tight and compressed, emphasizing treble and upper midrange at the expense of bass depth. However, koa tops are famous for "opening up" dramatically with playing time, developing warmth, bass response, and complexity over months and years. A well-played koa guitar of ten or twenty years' age can rival any spruce-topped instrument for richness and depth, while retaining koa's characteristic clarity and focus.
