This pattern was the standard before X-bracing gained dominance and remains in use today for certain applications, including parlor guitars, some flamenco instruments, resonator guitars, and budget production instruments. ## Process The braces are cut from spruce or a similar lightweight, stiff wood. They run across the full width of the top, from side to side, at regular intervals. A typical ladder-braced top might have four to six braces spaced 2-3 inches apart, with the brace spacing often tighter near the sound hole where structural stress is greatest. Each brace is fitted to the underside of the top, matching any dome or curvature in the workboard. The braces are glued and clamped, either individually or all at once if using a go-bar system. Shaping is straightforward compared to more complex patterns. The braces may be left rectangular or slightly rounded on top. Some builders taper the brace height toward the edges, making them tallest at the center and shortest at the sides. Scalloping is less common with ladder bracing but can be applied.
