This "flame" or "fiddleback" figure occurs when the wood fibers grow in a wavy pattern perpendicular to the grain, creating alternating bands of light and dark that appear to move as the viewing angle changes. Sugar maple from the eastern United States and southeastern Canada is the most commonly used species for instruments, while bigleaf maple from the Pacific Northwest offers wider boards and often more dramatic figure.
