It must be rigid, stable, and precisely angled to achieve correct string action at the bridge. The neck joint is one of the most critical assemblies in guitar construction because it must maintain its geometry under decades of constant string tension, varying humidity, and the stresses of playing and transport. The three most common neck joint types are the dovetail, the bolt-on, and the mortise-and-tenon. The dovetail joint is the traditional choice for steel-string acoustic guitars, offering a strong, self-locking connection. Bolt-on joints, popularized by Taylor Guitars with their NT (New Technology) neck, use bolts or screws for easy assembly, adjustment, and removal. Mortise-and-tenon joints are used in classical guitar building, particularly in the Spanish heel construction method. ## In Practice Each joint type has practical implications for both the builder and the end user. Dovetail joints provide excellent rigidity and vibration transfer but require high skill to execute and make neck angle adjustments (neck resets) labor-intensive, typically requiring steam to soften the hide glue.
