NutType: glossaryA slotted piece of bone, synthetic material, or metal at the headstock end of the fingerboard that spaces the strings and sets their height at the first fret.## Definition The nut is a small, precisely shaped piece of hard material, traditionally bone, that sits in a shallow slot at the junction of the fingerboard and headstock. It has individual slots cut for each string, and these slots serve three essential functions: they space the strings evenly across the fingerboard width, they set the string height at the first fret position, and they define one end of the vibrating string length (the other end being the saddle). Nut materials include bone, Tusq (a synthetic polymer), brass, graphite composites, and various plastics, each imparting slightly different tonal characteristics and friction properties. The nut is one of the most critical components for playability and tone in the first several fret positions. Slots that are too high make first-position chords difficult; slots that are too low cause open-string buzzing. ## In Practice Fitting a nut requires precise work. The luthier shapes the blank to fit the slot in the fingerboard, then carefully cuts each string slot to the correct width, depth, and angle using specialized nut files. The slot width must match the string gauge, and the bottom of each slot should be slightly radiused to cradle the string and prevent binding. The slot depth is set so that the clearance between the string and the first fret is just enough to prevent buzzing when the open string is played, typically around 0.3mm to 0.5mm for the treble strings and slightly more for the bass strings.
