The name "pipa" originally described the playing technique: "pi" (forward plucking) and "pa" (backward plucking). Early forms arrived in China via the Silk Road from Central Asia during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). The instrument reached its classical form during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), when it was the most popular instrument at court and among the general population. Pipa music has been continuously performed and developed since then, and the instrument remains central to Chinese traditional music, Chinese orchestra, and contemporary Chinese composition. The pipa has experienced growing international interest through virtuosi such as Wu Man and Liu Fang. ## Construction The modern pipa has a pear-shaped wooden body with a shallow, slightly arched back and a flat soundboard. The body is typically carved from a single piece of hardwood (red sandalwood, rosewood, or padauk) or assembled from several pieces. The soundboard is paulownia wood or wutong, chosen for its resonant properties. Four strings—originally silk, now steel wrapped with nylon—run over a high fret system consisting of 6 upper frets (xiang) on the neck and approximately 24 bamboo frets (pin) on the soundboard.
