The concept of relief is the same as neck relief, though the term is sometimes used more broadly to describe any intentional curvature in a structural element. A neck with no relief, perfectly straight, may buzz in the middle frets because the string's vibration amplitude is greatest at its midpoint. Too much relief raises the action unnecessarily in the middle of the neck, making the instrument harder to play.
