John Dopyera, a Slovak-American instrument maker, developed the tri-cone resonator design and co-founded the National String Instrument Corporation with George Beauchamp in 1927. The original tri-cone design used three small aluminum cones linked by a T-shaped bridge. After a business dispute, Dopyera left to form the Dobro Manufacturing Company (from Dopyera Brothers), where he developed the single-cone inverted design with a spider bridge. Both designs dramatically increased the guitar's volume, making it viable for Hawaiian music ensembles and blues performers. ## Construction Resonator guitars come in two primary designs. The single-cone design uses one large cone (approximately 9.5 inches in diameter) mounted face-down with a spider bridge that distributes string energy to the cone's perimeter. The tri-cone design uses three smaller cones connected via a T-bridge. Bodies are made from either brass, steel, or nickel-silver (for metal-body models) or wood (particularly for Dobro-style instruments).
