It serves primarily an aesthetic function, framing the sound hole and adding visual interest to the soundboard, though it also provides a small amount of structural reinforcement to the edge of the sound hole opening. Rosettes range from simple concentric rings of dyed wood or plastic to elaborate handmade mosaic patterns composed of hundreds of tiny wood tiles, to inlaid shell or stone designs. The rosette is one of the most visible features of an acoustic guitar's top and is often a signature element of a builder's style. Classical guitar rosettes tend to be wider and more elaborate, while steel-string guitars often feature simpler ring designs, though there are many exceptions. ## In Practice Rosette installation typically occurs early in the soundboard preparation process, before bracing. A shallow channel is routed into the soundboard at the sound hole perimeter, and the rosette material is glued into this channel, then sanded flush with the top surface. For simple ring rosettes, pre-made binding strips or purfling strips are bent into circles and glued in. Mosaic rosettes are assembled separately, often in a specialized jig, from tiny strips of colored wood that are bundled, glued, and sliced into thin tiles.
