Rosewood (Fingerboard)Type: tonewoodThe most widely used fingerboard wood in guitar construction, offering a warm, slightly rounded tonal character, natural oiliness, and a comfortable playing feel.## Botanical Description Rosewood fingerboards are typically made from Indian rosewood (*Dalbergia latifolia*), the same species used for back and sides, selected and graded specifically for fingerboard use. Fingerboard blanks require tight, straight grain, consistent density, and sufficient hardness to withstand string wear and fret installation. The color ranges from medium brown to dark purple-brown with darker streaks. The grain is fine to medium, and the oily nature of the wood gives it a naturally smooth, slightly waxy feel under the fingers. Some builders also use other Dalbergia species, such as Honduran rosewood (*Dalbergia stevensonii*) or Amazon rosewood (*Dalbergia spruceana*), each offering slightly different color and density characteristics. ## Tonal Properties Rosewood fingerboards produce a warm, rich, and slightly softened tonal character compared to ebony. The open pore structure and natural oils of rosewood dampen the highest frequencies slightly, rolling off some of the brightness and producing a rounder, warmer sound. Bass notes have a full, warm quality, and the midrange is smooth and present. Harmonics are clear but slightly less glassy than on ebony. Many players prefer the tonal balance of rosewood, finding it more musical and forgiving than ebony's uncompromising brightness.
