The strings pass over the saddle, which defines their height above the fingerboard at the bridge end and establishes the exact vibrating length of each string for accurate intonation. The saddle is one of the two termination points of the vibrating string (the nut being the other), and it is the primary transmission point for transferring string energy into the soundboard via the bridge. A well-fitted saddle sits snugly in its slot with full bottom contact, ensuring maximum energy transfer. The top of the saddle is rounded to prevent string breakage and shaped with compensation offsets to correct intonation. ## In Practice Shaping a saddle requires careful attention to multiple parameters. The saddle height determines the string action at the 12th fret; lowering the saddle reduces action and vice versa. The amount of saddle protruding above the bridge should generally be at least 2mm to 3mm to maintain adequate break angle for good tone and volume. A saddle that is too low results in poor string-to-soundboard coupling and a thin, weak tone.
