Saddle ShapingType: techniqueShaping the bridge saddle to set string height, radius, and intonation compensation at the bridge end of the guitar.## Overview The saddle is the thin strip of bone, Tusq, or other hard material seated in the bridge that transmits string vibration to the soundboard. Its height determines the string action at the 12th fret and beyond, its top radius must match the fretboard radius, and its profile can be shaped to provide intonation compensation. Saddle shaping is one of the most impactful setup operations and directly affects both playability and tone. ## Process The saddle blank is first fitted to the bridge slot. It should fit snugly—tight enough to stand upright without the strings but not so tight that it must be forced. A loose saddle reduces energy transfer to the top; an overly tight saddle risks cracking the bridge. The saddle height is the primary adjustment for string action. The luthier measures the current action at the 12th fret (the distance from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string) and calculates the required saddle height change. Because the saddle is located at roughly twice the distance from the nut as the 12th fret, removing 1mm from the saddle height reduces the action at the 12th fret by approximately 0.5mm. Material is removed from the bottom of the saddle using sandpaper on a flat surface. The luthier sands evenly, checking for flatness and squareness frequently.
