Trees can reach impressive dimensions, up to 45 meters tall with straight, cylindrical trunks that yield wide, clear lumber. The heartwood is a warm reddish-brown that darkens with exposure, displaying the pronounced ribbon-stripe figure that is sapele's visual hallmark. This interlocked grain produces alternating light and dark bands on quarter-sawn surfaces that catch the light beautifully. The wood is slightly denser and harder than Honduran mahogany, to which it is botanically related within the Meliaceae family. ## Tonal Properties Sapele is often described as a bridge between mahogany and rosewood in tonal character. It shares mahogany's warm, midrange-forward emphasis but with added brightness, crispness, and top-end sparkle that moves it slightly toward rosewood territory. The bass is tighter and more defined than mahogany, the midrange is present and warm, and the trebles have more shimmer and clarity. The overall effect is a balanced, versatile tone that works well for strumming, fingerpicking, and everything in between. Sapele guitars tend to project well and have a lively, responsive feel.
