Scale LengthType: glossaryThe vibrating length of the string from nut to saddle, the fundamental dimension that determines fret spacing, tension, and tonal character.## Definition Scale length is the distance between the nut and the saddle, representing the nominal vibrating length of the open strings. It is the single most fundamental dimension in guitar design because it determines fret positions, string tension at a given pitch, and the instrument's overall tonal character. Common guitar scale lengths include 648mm (25.5 inches, used by Fender and Martin dreadnoughts), 628mm (24.75 inches, used by Gibson), and 650mm (classical guitar standard). A longer scale length produces higher string tension for the same pitch and gauge, resulting in a brighter, more articulate tone with tighter low-end response. A shorter scale length yields lower tension, producing a warmer, more flexible feel that is easier on the fretting hand. Fret spacing is directly proportional to scale length, so longer scales have wider fret spacing. ## In Practice The scale length is established very early in the design process because it cascades through nearly every other dimension: bridge placement, fret slot positions, neck length, and body proportions all flow from this single number. Fret positions are calculated by dividing the remaining string length by the twelfth root of two (approximately 17.817) for each successive fret.
