By thinning the braces in selected areas while leaving them full-height at structural nodes, the luthier reduces the top's overall mass without proportionally reducing its stiffness. The result is a more responsive, louder, and often more complex-sounding instrument. ## Process Scalloping is performed after the braces have been glued to the top. Using a sharp chisel, gouge, or specialty brace-shaping tool, the luthier carves concave hollows into the top surface of each brace. The scallops are positioned between structural nodes—typically the brace ends, the X intersection, and the bridge plate area are left at full height. The depth and profile of each scallop are critical. A common approach is to reduce the brace height by 30-50% at the deepest point of the scallop. The transitions between full-height and scalloped sections should be smooth and gradual; abrupt changes in stiffness create stress concentrations and can cause tonal irregularities.
