Dissolved in denatured alcohol, it produces a finish that has been used on musical instruments for centuries. Shellac is the base material for French polishing, but it can also be applied by brush or spray for a faster, simpler finishing process. It produces a warm, amber-toned finish that enhances wood grain and is easily repaired or refreshed. ## Process Shellac is available in flake form in various grades and colors, from pale "super blonde" to dark "garnet." The flakes are dissolved in denatured alcohol at a specific ratio called the "cut"—a 2-pound cut (2 pounds per gallon) is standard for brush application, while a 1-pound cut is used for French polishing. For brush application, the luthier uses a high-quality natural-bristle brush and applies thin, even coats. Shellac dries quickly—typically touch-dry in 15-30 minutes—allowing multiple coats per day. Each coat is lightly sanded with 320-400 grit paper before the next application. For spray application, the shellac is thinned to a 1-pound cut and applied with an HVLP spray gun. Spray application builds thickness faster than French polishing but not as fast as brushing. Between four and eight coats typically provide adequate protection.
