It serves as the mating surface in a Fox-style bender or as a checking template when bending over an iron. Forms are typically cut from MDF or hardwood and may be faced with heat-resistant material like aluminum flashing. Each guitar model requires its own set of forms for the upper bout, waist, and lower bout curves. ## Use in Lutherie When using a Fox-style bending machine, the side blank is pressed against the heated bending form, which determines the final shape of the bent side. The form must match the body mold dimensions exactly, or the sides will not fit properly during assembly. When bending freehand over an iron, the form serves as a checking template: the luthier periodically holds the partially bent side against the form to verify the curve matches. Having an accurate form is critical for consistent guitar body dimensions. ## Selection Guide Side bending forms are almost always shop-made, cut from the same plans or templates used for the body mold. MDF is the most common material due to its stability and machinability. CNC-cut forms offer the highest precision. The form should be at least 20mm thick to provide a reliable reference surface.
