Solid LiningType: techniqueContinuous uncut wooden strips bent and glued inside the instrument body for a stiffer, more resonant connection between sides and plates.## Overview Solid lining uses continuous, uncut strips of wood rather than kerfed strips to line the interior edges of an instrument body. Because the strips have no kerfs, they must be bent to conform to the body shape before installation. Solid lining provides a stiffer, more rigid connection between the sides and the top and back plates, which some builders believe produces a more focused, responsive tone. ## Process Solid lining strips are typically made from spruce, mahogany, or other lightweight woods, cut to approximately 3/4 inch tall and 1/4 inch thick. Because they lack kerfs, they must be pre-bent to match the body contour using either a bending iron or steam. The luthier first bends each lining strip to approximate the shape of the side at the corresponding edge. The fit is checked against the inside of the body and adjusted as needed. Since the strips are continuous, they must follow the curves smoothly—any kinks or flat spots will create gaps. Once the strips are properly shaped, glue is applied and the lining is clamped in place. Fewer clamps are needed compared to kerfed lining because the pre-bent strip maintains contact along its entire length. However, the clamping must be firm to ensure a good bond. After curing, the lining is shaped to match the plate contour.
