Sound Hole Rosette InlayType: techniqueThe decorative ring surrounding a guitar's sound hole, crafted from wood mosaic tiles, purfling strips, abalone, or other materials.## Overview The sound hole rosette is one of the most distinctive decorative elements on an acoustic guitar. Ranging from simple concentric rings to elaborate mosaic patterns, the rosette frames the sound hole and showcases the builder's artistry. Beyond aesthetics, the rosette also reinforces the area around the sound hole, where the top plate is structurally weakened by the opening. ## Process The rosette channel is routed into the top plate before bracing is applied. Using a router mounted on a circle-cutting jig (or a dedicated rosette-cutting tool), the luthier cuts a shallow channel—typically 1.5-2.5mm deep—centered on the sound hole location. The channel width depends on the rosette design, commonly 6-12mm. For a wood mosaic rosette, individual tiles of colored wood are assembled into a strip. These tiles are often made by gluing together stacks of thin wood veneers in alternating colors, then slicing the stack crosswise to produce patterned squares or lozenges. The tiles are arranged in the channel, glued in place, and pressed flat. Simpler rosettes may consist of concentric rings of purfling—thin strips of wood or fiber in contrasting colors (such as black-white-black). These are bent to the appropriate radius, fitted into the channel, and glued. For abalone or shell rosettes, thin strips of shell are cut, shaped, and inlaid into the channel, often with black filler or epoxy between pieces.
