It is a tropical hardwood in the mahogany family (Meliaceae), native to Central and South America and the Caribbean. The tree can reach 30 meters in height and produces a lightweight, straight-grained wood with a warm pinkish-brown to reddish-brown color. It has a distinctive, pleasant aromatic scent (the same wood used to line cigar humidors) that persists for years. The grain is generally straight, and the texture is medium to coarse. Spanish cedar is softer and lighter than Honduran mahogany, making it well-suited to classical guitar neck construction where the lower string tension of nylon strings does not demand the same rigidity as steel strings. ## Tonal Properties As a neck wood, Spanish cedar contributes to the overall resonance and sustain of the instrument.
