The drum both rotates and oscillates up and down, which distributes wear across the abrasive surface and prevents heat buildup. Interchangeable spindle sizes (typically 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1.5 inch, and 2 inch diameters) accommodate different curve radii. The table may tilt for angled sanding. ## Use in Lutherie After cutting a guitar body outline on the bandsaw, the spindle sander smooths and refines the curved edges. It is especially useful for sanding the tight waist curve, cutaway profiles, and headstock contours where flat sanding tools cannot reach. The oscillating action prevents the drum from burning the wood and provides a smoother finish than a non-oscillating drum. It is also used for sanding interior curves on jigs, molds, and templates, and for refining the curves on pickguards and control cavity covers. ## Selection Guide A benchtop oscillating spindle sander with a 1/2 HP motor and multiple spindle sizes is sufficient for lutherie. Ridgid, WEN, and Jet offer reliable options in the 100 to 300-dollar range. Ensure the machine includes at least four spindle sizes. A tilting table is a useful feature for sanding bevels.
